Erik Desmazières, (1948, FR, Rabat Morocco) is considered one of the great contemporary printmakers and has had many major museum retrospectives in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Desmazières is an intaglio printmaker of the Art Fantastique school, whose artists find their aesthetic antecedents in Bresdin, Piranesi, Callot, and Durer. Desmazières resides in Paris and is a graduate of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris and studied printmaking at the Cours du Soir de la Ville de Paris. He has served as president of La Societe des Peintres Graveurs Francais. His etching depictions in the period 1970-1990 formed the fantasy characterizations for J.R.R. Tolkien’s film version of Lord of the Rings. Desmazières’s etchings have an ethereal quality due to his close attention to detail and his grasp of atmospheric light. His works are included in major museum collections around the world including retrospectives at the Rembrandthuis Museum (Amsterdam, 2004-05) Musée Carnavalet ( Paris, 2006-07)  Musée Jenisch (Vevey, Switzerland 2007).

Desmazières is een diepdrukker van de Art Fantastique-school, wiens kunstenaars hun esthetische antecedenten vinden in Bresdin, Piranesi, Callot en Durer. Desmazières woont in Parijs en is afgestudeerd aan het Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris en studeerde prentkunst aan de Cours du Soir de la Ville de Paris. Hij was voorzitter van La Societe des Peintres Graveurs Francais. Zijn etsafbeeldingen in de periode 1970-1990 vormden de fantasiekarakteriseringen voor de J.R.R. Tolkiens verfilming van Lord of the Rings. De etsen van Desmazières hebben een etherische kwaliteit vanwege zijn grote aandacht voor detail en zijn greep op atmosferisch licht. Zijn werken zijn opgenomen in grote museumcollecties over de hele wereld, waaronder retrospectieven in het Rembrandthuis Museum (Amsterdam, 2004-05) Musée Carnavalet (Parijs, 2006-07) Musée Jenisch (Vevey, Zwitserland 2007).
