His professional training laid the foundation for his artistic development and technical expertise in casting. In Rotterdam he was taught by Arie Teeuwissen (sculpture) and Gijs Voskuyl (drawing). Hartman studied sculpture in Amsterdam, under the renowned professors, Paul Gregoire and Peter Esser.\u00a0 His figurative sculptures show that he is faithful to the basic spatial concepts with sculpture. Portraits are an important subject for Hartman. Hartman works from the inside where the form gradually takes shape; this is a slow process to build up from inside until it reaches the outer skin. Once this is achieved, the image takes the final form and expression. Then comes the technically complex phase of making the mold and the casting and finishing work on the sculpture such as the patina. Jaap Hartman as bronze caster and sculptor is an obvious master of the entire process of creating beauty and thought out of metal.  Jaap Hartman\u00a0(1950, Nederland) is beeldhouwer en bronsgieter. Hij volgde\u00a0zijn opleiding aan de Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in\u00a0Rotterdam en aan de Rijksacademie van Amsterdam.\u00a0\u00a0Deze opleidingen legden de basis voor zijn artistieke ontwikkeling\u00a0en zijn technisch vakmanschap. In Rotterdam kreeg hij o.a. les\u00a0van Arie Teeuwissen (beeldhouwen) en Gijs Voskuyl (tekenen).\u00a0 In Amsterdam waren het de gerenommeerde hoogleraren Paul Gregoire en Piet Esser die hem de principes van de\u00a0beeldhouwkunst bijbrachten. Zijn figuratieve beelden laten zien\u00a0dat hij trouw blijft aan de basisgedachte dat beeldhouwen werken\u00a0in en met de ruimte is. Werkend van binnen naar buiten krijgt de\u00a0vorm langzamerhand gestalte. Portretten zijn altijd een belangrijk\u00a0onderwerp geweest voor Jaap Hartman. Ook hier is zijn werkwijze een langzaam opbouwen van\u00a0binnenuit totdat hij is aangekomen bij de buitenkant, de huid.\u00a0 Op dat moment\u00a0heeft het beeld zijn definitieve vorm en expressie verkregen en wordt er\u00a0niet meer aan geschaafd. Daarna volgt de technisch complexe fase\u00a0van het maken van de mal en het gieten van het brons, het afwerken\u00a0en patineren. Als bronsgieter kan Jaap Hartman dit hele proces in eigen hand houden."}
