Jan van Lokhorst (1954, NL) paintings are most often characterized by the abundance use of oil paint to structure impasto texture on the canvas. Emotion in Lokhorst art draws on this pleasing style with traces of earlier Dutch abstract expressionist artists such as Karel Appel and Willem de Koning who preceded him. Lokhorst initiates his process through the visualization of the composition and pauses to reaffirm his conceived painting. As Lokhorst states a painting birth is 80% through effective looking and 15% to structure the paint around and 5% to form the paints into his desired composition.  Correct decisions take at a good deal of preparation before the moment the painting arrives. Characteristics for Lokhorst’s paintings consist of a multiplicity of drawing variations in blended colors to capture the brilliance of the paint. Lokhorst creates the forms and stratification in his painting in balance with autonomous expression to result in a visual grip between the abstract and the figurative. His works are collected around the world and found in unique settings such as the swimming pool dwellings of the famous, cathedrals to the meeting halls of the Dutch parliament.

Jan van Lokhorst est un peintre résolument expressionniste. Après une période de travail abstrait, Jan van Lokhorst représente maintenant de plus en plus de figures humaines, de musiciens et surtout d’animaux sauvages. Ses toiles sont exposées dans différents musées aux Pays-Bas. Son travail a été acheté par le ministère néerlandais des Finances, des particuliers et des entreprises à travers les Pays- Bas et aussi par des acteurs tels Kevin Costner (pour son appartement parisien).
