Diamond point engrave etching, 18 x 28 cm 14/30. Catalog Jakob Demus The Complete Graphic Work 1983-2005, compiled by Ed de Heer #205

Jakob Demus was born in 1959 in Vienna. He is one of the most important graphic artists in the world. Demus is the only contemporary graphic artist to specialize in using the diamond-drypoint technique on copper plates without a preliminary drawing. He alone knows how to master the said special technique. Demus made several silverpoint drawings before the embarkment of his brainchild, the ‘diamond point’. Jakob Demus (1959-) received his degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1984. His work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Rembrandt Huis Museum in 2005 and a catalog raisonné has been published by the Hercules Segers Foundation, compiled by Ed de Heer. Demus prints embody his belief in earth and all matter as a single animated whole which he consistently seeks to connect with nature the subject matter in his art.

Like drypoint, this technique is used predominantly to add extra accents to etchings. The editions are small twenty to thirty impressions on handmade paper.

However, Demus is the first person to use this technique in a systematic way. As is the case with drypoint, the design is drawn directly onto the plate without any chemical process.

Jakob Demus is de enige hedendaagse graficus die gespecialiseerd is in het gebruik van de diamant-drypoint-techniek op koperplaat zonder voorafgaande tekening. Hij alleen weet de genoemde speciale techniek onder de knie te krijgen.
