Shadows of a Futures Past

Open mould casting glass, 2016, 30 x 40 x 20 cm

Willem van Oijen sculpture combines bronze, iron and wood to accentuate and contrast sculpted glass. Van Oijen manipulates the glass surface with engraved deep reliefs to break the surface and so to change the material. He combines other techniques, such as color glass appliqué, glass fusion and sandblast. Glass objects are built from the interwoven forms in an alternating game of frosted and transparent parts. The transparent “windows” create variable characteristics between the front and back of the object, where an extra dimension in the design arises. Thus the transparency, one of the most important aspects of the glass is exploited entirely. Transparency, irradiation and fragility of the glass are extra accentuated, by the contradiction with materials as bronze and iron.  The materials reinforce each other to give the fluent pattern recognizable form. All facets of the glass blend with the organic materials like carved stone or wood to result in a deeper relief block form.  The hard, heavy and robust sides of the glass are exploited entirely to mirror the massive objects. The form and lines radiate from the glass motifs derived from the Celtic and Inuit’s, the indigenous people of the North West coast of Canada.  Van Oijen finds inspiration from historic cultural heritages that are reflected in his artistic expressions.
